Make decent work a reality in Africa: Monrovia forum

Participants at a Monrovia international workshop called Wednesday for practical strategic partnerships between African countries, civil society organisations and development partners "to make decent work a reality in Africa".
"The forum gave us the opportunity to share our various experiences, something we will use to make decent work a reality on the continent", Mpenga Kabundi, International Labour Organization (ILO) deputy regional director, told AFP.
"We see decent work as a core human right," Mary Robinson, the former Irish president and UN human rights commissioner, said at the end of the the first high-level forum in sub-Saharan Africa on better pay and working conditions for Africa's workers.
"This meeting is part of a wider strategic effort to get more priority for decent work in the context of discussions in the 63rd session of the UN General Assembly on the Millennium Development Goals."
A press release issued by the ILO and the Realizing Rights group founded by Robinson said that "consensus and recommendations focussed on practical examples from the region including Ghana, Mozambique, Nigeria, Tanzania and Zambia to promote and implement decent work approaches, post-conflict reconstruction and job creation".
"Employment creation is a key component of reintegration and peace building", emphasized Jordan Ryan, UN Deputy Special Representative for Liberia, by "calling for a strong focus on jobs, jobs, jobs".
