Complain against (Bapco) trade union

GDN- By MANDEEP SINGH: BAPCO yesterday said it had lost nearly BD4 million as a result of its workers responding to a strike called by the General Federation of Bahrain Trade Unions.

An official said the company has also filed a complaint at the Public Prosecution against board members of its trade union for instigating employees to join the strike. "The board sent out written invitations to all employees to join a strike starting on March 13. It also called a strike on February 20.

"Many workers responded and did not come to worksites. As a result, production ceased in some key refining units."

The official said the action also caused disunity and unrest among employees. "In addition, Bapco's reputation was considerably harmed."

The official said these actions represented a violation of the penal law. "Bapco employees offer a public service according to this law, and that this service is essential for each citizen because it secures oil and gas supplies. The employees' act should be punished according to the penal law."

The official said members of the union's governing body were joined by others in instigating workers to stop coming to work despite knowing their action was illegal.

"We have asked the Public Prosecutor to probe the issue and take all measures under the law to refer the violators to the court. Bapco will also ask the court to dissolve the governing body.

"We reserve all rights to claim compensation against losses we suffered due to the employees' criminal actions."

So far, 202 refinery employees have been sacked and 54 suspended for skipping work during a wave of protests and strikes since mid-February.

Bapco said last week its investigations were on going into absenteeism of staff.

Parliament is also probing into absenteeism at the company during the protests.
