Unionists hold talks with ILO delegation

GDN: UNIONISTS yesterday met a visiting International Labour Organisation (ILO) delegation to discuss key issues including their controversial decision to go on nationwide strike.

Held at the headquarters of the General Federation of Bahrain Trade Unions (GFBTU) in Adliya, it was chaired by secretary-general, Salman Mahfoodh and ILO deputy director-general Guy Ryder.

GFBTU board members explained the problems faced by workers during the unrest and its aftermath that resulted in mass dismissals of workers mainly in private sector.

Mr Ryder later met with trade union heads from several companies including former Shura Council member and ex-GFBTU secretary-general Abdulghaffar Abdulhussain.

The GFBTU has already registered more than 1,000 sacked Bahraini workers, who came forward to register for an unemployment insurance scheme.

They include 223 from Alba, 243 from Bapco and 136 workers each from APM Terminals and Batelco. Other sacked staff include 90 from Gulf Air, 33 from Asry, 36 from Banagas and 49 from Bahrain Airport Services.

Ministries and companies in private sector dismissed staff for allegedly skipping work to take part in anti-government protests called by GFBTU and unjustified absenteeism.

His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa ordered a crackdown on absentee public sector workers last month.

Following the directives, several ministries formed investigation committees or commissions of inquiry to take action against staff violating Civil Service Bureau rules.
