Personal safety of the Bahrain union leaders under threats

LaboutTime: The International Trade union confederation (ITUC) has urged the Bahraini government to “reinstate all fired workers, guarantee the return of all trade union representatives to their jobs and allow them to resume their trade union functions”.

The (ITUC) General Secretary, Sharan Burrow, expressed “deepest concern at the attacks on the Bahraini trade union movement” in a letter sent to His Majesty The king.

“The (ITUC) has been informed that dismissals of workers for participating in demonstrations calling for democracy and reforms, have increased and are clearly focusing on leaders of the trade union organizations” she said.

“Furthermore, the president and executive committee of the BAPCO trade union have been referred to military court without any explanation” Burrow adds.

ITUC expressed “real fears” for the personal safety of trade union leaders, including Salman Jaffar Al Mahfoodh, General Secretary of the GFBTU.

ITUC emphasized that all charges by the government and parliament, voiced by the press, about a conspiracy to overthrow the regime, are “false accusations" that "targeted the independence and the integrity of the trade union movement”.

“As a member of the ILO, Bahrain is bound by international treaties, and we remind you that your government must fulfil its obligations and respect trade union rights and fundamental liberties such as freedom of expression” Burrow emphasized.

The letter which, which was sent on May 19th, urged His Majesty to “Immediately withdraw the decision to have BAPCO workers tried in the military court; ensure the immediate and unconditional release of all detained workers; put an end to any acts of harassment against trade union leaders and activists, including at the judicial level; halt the media campaign against the leadership of the GFBTU and all other activists; reinstate all fired workers, guarantee the return of all trade union representatives to their jobs and allow them to resume their trade union functions”.

(ITUC) represents 301 affiliated member organizations and has a total membership of 176 million workers in 151 countries and territories.
