US union group seeks to halt trade pact with Bahrain over kingdom's crackdown

AP: A major U.S.-based labour group is asking Washington to suspend a free trade pact with Bahrain in response to the Gulf nation's crackdown that includes purging union leaders accused of supporting pro-reform protests.

A senior official for the AFL-CIO says the petition urges American trade officials to halt the special accord that waives tariffs on industrial and consumer products. Bahrain is a key U.S. ally and home to the Navy's 5th Fleet.

Jeff Vogt, an AFL-CIO official, said on Monday that it's the first time the group has sought to halt a trade pact because of political pressures.

Bahrain's Sunni rulers have imposed martial law and made widespread arrests after an uprising by majority Shiites for greater freedoms.
