Action against 300 Asian workers for going on strike

GDN: ISCIPLINARY action will be taken against around 300 Asian workers for going on an illegal strike to demand wage increases. Mohammed Jalal Contracting Company spokesman said the workers had been on strike since Saturday, but didn't inform the management ahead of time.

The workers from India, Nepal, Pakistan and Bangladesh claimed they received wages ranging between BD65 and BD85, which they said were not enough to survive.

However, the management told the GDN the workers had taken an illegal step and disciplinary action is being taken against them.

"They are demanding an increment and went on strike without informing the management, which is illegal," said the spokesman, who didn't specify what action would be taken against them.

"We met them on Saturday and an internal process is taking place to follow and resolve the matter.

"I like to highlight that they had been paid their benefits on time and there are no dues.

"The company is in negotiation with them and an internal process to resolve the matter is being carried out.

"I believe some workers have also complained to the Indian Embassy and the Labour Ministry."

A ministry spokesman said the workers had come to them to file a complaint, but were asked to inform the company first.

"If they haven't informed the company, it is an illegal strike and we can't take any action".

The workers, who live in Salmabad accommodation, claimed they don't save enough to send to their families home.

"We had come to live a descent life in Bahrain by working hard and earn to support our families," said a worker.

"But we get very less wages and find it difficult to survive, so how can we send money to our families?

"We need an increment to pay expenses of everyday living and save some money for our families.

"The company has terminated 40 workers, saying the strike is illegal.

"The owner of the company doesn't know what's happening, but the managers and supervisors know our situation and how we are living," the worker added.

"They give the contracts to other contracting companies to get commission although we are here to work."
