MOL: 29 worker killed in work site accidents since January

DT: The Labour Ministry has received reports of 29 worksite deaths from various accidents in this year alone, it was announced.

“Twenty nine deaths were reported to the Labour Ministry from the start of the year upto June 12. The ministry continues to study regulations that can be implemented to promote the safety and health of our workers,” Labour Ministry Inspections Director Ahmed Al Hayki told DT.

A total of 101 workers were involved in several accidents.

The prime reason for a majority of the accidents is due to falling from heights followed by 13 incidents of body parts being jammed or stuck during work. This was followed by 12 injuries that occurred due to falling objects. Ten injuries have been caused by slipping, followed by nine incidents of explosions, moving objects or machinery and other types of injuries. Three electrocutions and one drowning were also reported within the first half of the year.

These incidents resulted in nine amputations, 14 cases of concussions, 27 cases of broken bones and nine cases of burns of varying degree.

Deducing from all these injuries, the most accident-prone industry is construction with 47 injuries or death. This is followed by the manufacturing sector with 27 cases, hotel and restaurant with 11 and social services at 8 cases.

So far, the industries with the least accidents are the economic and drilling sector with three cases each and electricity, water, transportation and communication sectors with one accident per sector.

Hopefully, the summer work ban coupled with the onset of Ramadan will show a decline in these incidences for the remainder of the year.
