Preserve jobs where possible – Chen

Radiojamaica:The Jamaica Employers Federation (JEF) has given mixed reactions to a call from the Ministry of Labour for a moratorium on redundancies and lay-offs as the economy grapples with the effects of the global economic crunch.

Labour Minister Pearnel Charles has been urging employers to consider several options, including reducing working days and hours instead of job cuts. But JEF President Wayne Chen says while employers are aware of the need to preserve jobs, this is proving to be difficult against the background of the sharp economic decline.

"We support the Minister's concern that we deny jobs losses at this time because the social fabric is very delicate and you don't want to do anything that will create a disruption but at the same time, businesses are also under pressure and individual businesses have to take measures to ensure their own survival. In doing so, we're encouraging all our members and all employers in Jamaica to the greatest extent possible, preserve jobs at this time," said Mr. Chen.
