Bahrain's commitment praised by ILO

GDN: BAHRAIN was yesterday praised for its commitment to international labour covenants. This came as Labour Minister Jameel Humaidan received International Labour Organisation (ILO) standards and fundamental principles and rights at work sector executive director Guy Ryder and regional director Nada Al Nashif.

Mr Ryder also hailed government-led efforts to bring unemployment under control, achieve decent work standards, and adopt laws on insurance against unemployment, trade unions as well as the legislation allowing workers to swap employers.

He expressed confidence in the authorities' ability to address the repercussions of the recent unrest and contain potential damage which may affect individuals and society.

Mr Ryder stressed the importance of observing legal procedures when laying off workers for Bahrain to preserve achievements under His Majesty's reform project. He thanked the government for allowing the ILO delegation to address all issues in relation to the unrest. The meeting discussed results of talks with senior officials, businessmen, companies, workers and trade unions
