Delegation of ILO in Bahrain

Labourtime: A high-level delegation from the International Labour Organization (ILO) headed by the Deputy Director General, Guy Ryder, will reach Bahrain today, to discuss the latest developments in the Bahraini labor, especially in light of layoffs, which affected hundreds of workers and employees in the public and private sectors.



It is scheduled to meet with the Government, Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry as representatives of employers, and the General Federation of Bahrain Trade Unions (GFBTU) as the representative of the workers.



The ILO has stressed on the in a letter sent to Bahrain Government by the Director General of the International Labour Office, Juan Somavia, expressed "concern about the developments in Bahrain, especially after the receipt of information about the practices of discrimination, anti-union right of leaders and members of the (GFBTU)"



Somavia urged the Bahraini authorities to take immediate and decisive action to assure that the Bahraini workers and their trade unions to any form of additional forms of injustice or unfairness or humiliation for the expression of their legitimate rights in accordance with the principles of freedom of association.



Bahrain's ratified the ILO Convention (111) on the prohibition of discrimination in employment and occupation, which states in its provisions on the inadmissibility of the action against the workers and staff for their political views.
