India lifts ban on unskilled workers

GDN: A TEMPORARY ban on unskilled workers who require emigration clearance was lifted by the Indian Embassy yesterday.

"The temporary suspension of grant of Emigration Clearance to Bahrain has been lifted with immediate effect," it said.

On April 12, GDN had quoted an embassy official as saying that recommendations had been sent to the Indian government to lift the ban as the situation in the kingdom had improved.

On March 15, the Overseas Indian Affairs Ministry had introduced a one-month ban on emigration to Bahrain, following protests.

Indian passports are divided into two categories, passports with endorsement of Emigration Check Required (ECR) and Emigration Check Not Required (ECNR).

The ban was only applicable to those who did not pass secondary school and obtain the Secondary School Leaving Certificate. Their passports are ECR stamped.

An Indian man was killed on March 16 in crossfire during clashes in Budaiya.

Stephen Abraham, 40, was on the phone to his wife in India when he was shot.

He worked as a security guard with Y K Almoayyed and Sons, who have come forward to support his family by paying for the education of his son Steffin and 13-year-old daughter Steny.
