Bahrain cuts employment to workers suspected of participation in demonstrations

Arab Monitor: The International Labour Organization says at least two thousand Bahraini workers - mainly Shiites - have been sacked or suspended from their working places in retaliation for their presumed participation in the protest demonstrations.

Juan Somariva, the Director-General of the ILO, urged Bahraini authorities to take immediate action to prevent any more harm in the form of unjust and degrading treatment of Bahrain's workers and their labour unions for having expressed their legitimate rights in accordance with the principles of freedom of association.

The call follows a letter addressed by ILO to the Prime Minister of Bahrain on 1 April, in which Juan Somariva expressed his concerns over reports of widespread repressive and discriminative measures taken against the members of the General Federation of Bahrain's Trade Unions in the wake of peaceful demonstrations.
