Bahrain's Gulf Air lays off 200; bookings slumped

Bahrain's government-run carrier Gulf Air says it has laid off 200 employees, and bookings have fallen amid months of unrest in the kingdom.

The airline said in a statement e-mailed Tuesday that it can't comment on specific dismissals, but it insists they were carried out according to company policies and Bahraini labor law.

It says 100 of the employees have appealed the dismissals, and 11 have won their jobs back so far.

Gulf Air says separately that its bookings have dropped 25 percent in the first five months of the year. It says it is optimistic about the summer after an upturn in reservations since May 1.

Bahrain was gripped by widespread protests and labor unrest led by the country's Shiite majority until a government crackdown in March.
