GDN: A POLICEMAN who allegedly assaulted and severely injured an Indian businessman in Manama yesterday has been suspended and taken into custody.
Capital Governorate Police director-general Brigadier Naji Alhashel said the Pakistani policeman, who was on duty at the Bab Al Bahrain police station, would be produced in court today.
He was charged with assaulting Fuad Kelothpanchara when he approached the police station to report a case.
"We have taken serious note of this incident and will take all possible strict action," Brig Alhashel told the GDN.
"The policeman has already been suspended and taken into custody, he will be dealt with according to the law."
He said the police were for the protection of the people.
"No one is above the law. This action is unpardonable," said Brig Alhashel.
He said the victim's statement had been recorded and the police were conducting further investigations.
Mr Kelothpanchara, who has a business in the Gold City, said he was beaten up when he went to the police station to complain about damage to his car.
He sustained bruises all over his face and chest in the attack, with severe injury to his right eye that required hospital treatment.
"My car was parked near Sahara Hotel and I was loading some goods when a man pushing a hand cart hit and damaged part of the number plate that ripped off from the impact," said Mr Kelothpanchara.
He said the man, who had been unloading milk from a truck, dismissed his concerns and told him to repair the vehicle.
"Since the damage was substantial, I wanted to go to the police to complain," said Mr Kelothpanchara.
He said he asked a traffic policeman at Bab Al Bahrain what to do and was told not to bother with the traffic authorities since the damage to his car did not involve another vehicle.
"At the Bab Al Bahrain police station, I was stopped from entering by a policeman, who then rudely told me not to bother them," said Mr Kelothpanchara.
Investigation
He claimed he was told to go to the traffic police station near the Exhibition Centre.
"I complied, but again I was told by a traffic policeman to register a complaint with the regular police," said Mr Kelothpanchara.
He claimed when he went again to the Bab Al Bahrain police station, the same policeman abused him and started beating him up with a pair of handcuffs.
"I tried to reason with him but he kept beating me and was very abusive," said Mr Kelothpanchara.
A senior officer later emerged from the station and apologised, he added.
Mr Kelothpanchara later went to the Indian Embassy to register a complaint and then to the Hoora police station when he was met by Brig Alhashel.
He was also treated at Salmaniya Medical Complex.

Interesting... So I guess an Indian businessman is injured by police and the police that attacked him is stopped and investigated while Bahrainis are attacked, injured and killed and nobody up to date has been investigated.
